Ferris State Volleyball Invited To Compete In Grand Rapids Sports Hall Of Fame Showcase This Weekend
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's volleyball squad will have a special opportunity to compete on Saturday (April 14) as the Bulldogs take part in the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Volleyball Showcase in Grand Rapids.
The Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Showcase is a unique event that takes place each spring and features top-level collegiate volleyball teams.
Collegiate volleyball teams play a spring schedule of events in preparation for their fall regular-seasons and the showcase provides an opportunity to compete against strong competition.
The event will take place on the campus of Aquinas College at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center in Grand Rapids and include Ferris State along with the University of Michigan and Western Michigan University.
Originally founded by the Grand Rapids City Commission in 1972, the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame honors prominent West Michigan athletes as well as those who have contributed greatly to sports on a local, state or national level. It is showcased on plaques along the walls of the upper level of the Van Andel Arena. Currently there are 151 inductees.
The Sports Hall of Fame annually sponsors, presents or volunteers to help at community events and activities throughout West Michigan. Funds generated through these efforts are donated to local youth sports organizations and charities. A group of local citizens serve as our officers and trustees to guide the selection of inductees, but the nomination of a sports figure to the Sports Hall of Fame is open to the public.
Ferris State made its seventh consecutive NCAA Tournament bid this past fall and has advanced to at least the regional semifinals each of the last seven years. FSU's regional appearance this past year represented the program's 22nd all-time NCAA bid.
In 2017, FSU closed the year with a 24-8 overall mark and also captured the program's fourth-straight GLIAC Regular Season and Tournament Championships. FSU became the first school to ever win four consecutive league tourney crowns this past fall.
This past year also marked the 16th time in 22 seasons under head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm in which FSU had claimed at least 20 victories in a campaign. The Bulldogs also made their 20th consecutive GLIAC Tournament appearance this past season.
