Sixth-Ranked Ferris State Scores Rivalry Win Over GVSU In Allendale

Allendale, Mich. – The nationally sixth-ranked Ferris State University women's volleyball team stayed undefeated in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) with a 3-1 victory over the Grand Valley State Lakers on Saturday (Sept. 29) at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.

Ferris State took the first two sets 25-18 and 25-18 before dropping the third 25-22, but rebounded for a 25-18 win in the fourth set.

Offensively, the Bulldogs were potent and hit for a .312 attack percentage for the match. Four Bulldogs finished in double digits in kills, led by sophomore outside hitter Katie O'Connell's 18, while junior outside hitter Courtney Brewer added 16 kills. Junior outside hitter Allyson Cappel finished with 12 kills and junior middle hitter Mekayla Carey picked up 10.

The Lakers were led by the 15 kills of Staci Brower, who also led the match in total blocks with four. Defensively, Kendall Yerkes had a team-high 25 digs.

Defensively, the Bulldogs got strong performances from Cappel who finished with 26 digs, and senior libero Katie Placek, who added 22. O'Connell also had 16 digs in the match.

Ferris State junior setter Maeve Grimes had a match-high 44 assists, as GVSU's Ashlyn Kartes finished with 20. Both Grimes and Kartes played integral roles in the attack with five kills apiece.

The Bulldogs will put their nine-match winning streak to the test when they return home to take on the Wayne State Warriors in GLIAC play on Friday (Oct. 5) at the Ewigleben Sports Complex, with first serve set for 7 p.m. (ET).
