Ferris State Volleyball Moves To #5 In The Nation In AVCA Poll This Week

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's volleyball squad is back in the nation's top five as the Bulldogs climbed to #5 in the nation in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division II Rankings following a weekend home sweep.

The Bulldogs, who are now 16-3 on the year, stayed perfect in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action at 11-0 with a pair of wins over GLIAC South Division leaders Wayne State and Ashland this past weekend in Big Rapids.

The four-time defending GLIAC Champions compiled 962 total points and one first-place national vote this week in moving to #5 overall. FSU had been as high as #4 in the nation following the first week of the campaign.

In this week's poll, Cal-State San Bernardino garnered 35 first-place votes and 1,170 total points in earning the top nod. Northern State came in second with 1,121 points and eight first-place mentions with Nebraska-Kearney at number three, totaling 1,081 points and two top votes. Defending national champion Concordia-St. Paul (993) and FSU rounded out the top five overall.

The Bulldogs are now one of two GLIAC member schools found in the top 25 this week along with #25 Michigan Tech and are ranked the highest of any team in the Midwest Region.

The Bulldogs will put their 11-match winning streak to the test as they travel to Indianapolis this weekend for the 2018 Midwest Region Crossover.

The regional volleyball event will feature 38 NCAA DII midwest region programs, including 14 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC), 12 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), and 12 Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) volleyball programs that will represent their respective conferences.

Overall, the two-day tournament features 57 matches conducted on 10 courts throughout six sessions at one of the top volleyball facilities in the country. The event, designed to increase competition between teams from the three leagues in the NCAA Division II Midwest Region, has previously been held in Indianapolis, Ind., Lansing, Mich., and Aurora, Ill.

Ferris State, which is the GLIAC's top seed for the tournament, will face Findlay of the G-MAC along with GLVC members Indianapolis and Drury in weekend action.

The Bulldogs open tournament play on Friday versus the G-MAC's second-seed in Findlay at 11:30 a.m. (ET). FSU then takes on the GLVC's fifth-seed Indianapolis on Friday at 5:30 p.m. (ET) before concluding the action on Saturday versus the GLVC's top seed in Drury at 1 p.m. (ET).
