Sixth-Ranked Bulldogs Sweep Parkside In First Round Of GLIAC Tournament

Big Rapids, Mich. - The nationally sixth-ranked Ferris State University women's volleyball squad swept eighth-seeded Wisconsin-Parkside 3-0 on Wednesday (Nov. 8) night in the quarterfinal round of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament at FSU's Ewigleben Sports Arena.

With the win, the Bulldogs will next play host to the GLIAC Semifinals and Finals this Friday and Saturday, Nov. 9-10, in Big Rapids.

Ferris State handled the Rangers in decisive fashion by taking the opening frame 25-14 before scoring a 25-10 victory in set two followed by a 25-13 decision in the finale.

Sophomore outside hitter Katie O'Connell had 12 kills on the night in leading the Bulldogs along with junior middle hitter Makayla Carey, who finished with 11 kills as well. They were closely followed by junior outside hitter Allyson Cappel's eight kills in the victory.

The Bulldogs totaled 35 kills on the night and only nine errors with a .299 hitting percentage. FSU also finished with 55 digs, nine aces and six total blocks.

Meanwhile, the Rangers were limited to only 22 kills with 23 hitting mistakes for a -.010 attack figure. Parkside managed 38 digs to go with a single ace and three blocks.

The Bulldogs got a team-high 15 digs from senior libero Katie Placek in addition to 13 from O'Connell. Senior defensive specialist Kayla Rosman tallied four aces with Carey had three block assists and a solo hit at the net.

With the triumph, the Bulldogs improved to 24-4 overall this season and FSU now owns a perfect 14-0 mark at home this year. Parkside had its season come to a close with an 8-21 overall mark.

Ferris State will square off against fourth-seeded Saginaw Valley State in the first semifinal match of the league tournament on Friday starting at 3 p.m. (ET). Second-seeded Michigan Tech will face sixth-seeded Davenport in the second semifinal at 5:30 p.m. The title match is then set for Saturday at 4 p.m.
