Denver, Colo. - The nationally 11th-ranked Ferris State University women's volleyball team fell to the West Florida Argonauts 3-2 and the Concordia St. Paul Golden Bears 3-0 on the first day of the Colorado Premier Challenge at the Regis Fieldhouse in Denver.
In the opening match, Ferris State had several attackers in double-digit kills. Senior outside hitter Allyson Cappel had 20 kills to lead all attackers in the match. Fellow senior outside hitter Courtney Brewer added 14 with junior outside hitter Katie O'Connell chipping in 13. Sophomore middle hitter Samantha Hermann finished with 10 kills, hitting .333, while freshman middle hitter Kira Merkle added nine kills with a .350 attack percentage.
Ferris State won the first set 25-22 and the third 25-23, but were unable to climb in front in the decisive fifth set, falling 25-22, 22-25, 25-23,19-25, 9-15.
Merkle also led the Bulldogs with five total blocks in the match, while Cappel picked up three total blocks.
Defensively, senior libero Lauren Helsen had a match-high 26 digs with O'Connell following with 16 digs of her own. Helsen also picked up two service aces.
Senior setter Maeve Grimes paced the match with a single-match career-high 60 assists for Ferris State.
West Florida had a balanced attack, but were stout at the net. Veresia Yon had 10 total blocks for the Argo's to go with 10 kills. Jordyn Poppen had 18 kills to lead West Florida. Three Argonauts finished with 10 or more kills.
Ferris State lost the second match of the evening 24-26, 18-25, 17-25 to Concordia St. Paul. FSU's O'Connell had nine kills in the second match of the day to lead Ferris State, followed by eight from Cappel and seven from Merkle.
Helsen again lead Ferris State in digs with 16. Grimes finished with a pair of service aces against Concordia St. Paul.
The Golden Bears were led by Jasmine Mulvihill, who had 11 kills to lead all attackers in the match. Kennedy Brady led the match for CSP with three total blocks.
Ferris State is back in action at 11 a.m. (ET) on Saturday, Sept. 14, against top-ranked Tampa at the Colorado Premier Challenge. The Bulldogs will then face Barry (Fla.) starting at 4:30 p.m. (ET) in their final match.
