Bulldog Volleyball Wins Final Two Matches At Colorado Premier Challenge

Denver, Co. – The nationally 11th-ranked Ferris State women's volleyball wrapped up the Colorado Premier Challenge with a 3-0 sweep of nationally #1 ranked and defending national champion University of Tampa, followed by a 3-2 victory over the Barry University Buccaneers.

In the opening match against Tampa, the Bulldogs had to battle twice into extra points, winning 26-24, 31-29 and 25-19.

Ferris State senior outside hitter Allyson Cappel led the Bulldogs with 13 kills and hit .205 for the day. Junior outside hitter Katie O'Connell had 12, while senior outside hitter Courtney Brewer had 11.

For the Bulldogs, senior setter Maeve Grimes had a match-high 42 assists. O'Connell led the Bulldogs with 26 digs.

Tampa was led by the 13 kills of Mackenzie Dufresne, and 38 assists by Sammy Mueller.

Against Barry, Ferris State won 25-11, 23-25, 20-25, 25-22, and 15-8 to move to 6-2 overall on the season. Ferris State hit an explosive .467 in the opening set, .292 in the fourth, and .412 in the final set of the day.

Cappel again finished as the Bulldog leader with 19 kills as four Bulldogs finished with 13 or more kills. Sophomore middle hitter Samantha Hermann had 14 kills, O'Connell had 15, while Brewer finished with 13.

Ferris State got another strong match out of Grimes who had a match-best 56 assists. Senior libero Lauren Helsen had a team-high 23 digs in the match.

Barry's Kishara Jordan had 15 kills to lead the Buccaneers, while Megi Buvinic had 23 digs as well for Barry.

Ferris State is back in action at Lake Superior State to open Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action on Friday, Sept. 20, at 6:30 pm.
