Ferris State Volleyball Opens GLIAC Play With Dominating Road Win At LSSU

Big Rapids, Mich. - The nationally 10th-ranked Ferris State University women's volleyball squad opened Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action with a convincing 3-0 road sweep over Lake Superior State on Friday (Sept. 20) night in Sault Ste. Marie.

The Bulldogs dominated the match by winning 25-15, 25-13 and 25-20 to improve to 7-2 overall this year.

FSU was paced by junior hitter Katie O'Connell's team-best 10 kills with senior hitter Allyson Cappel adding eight kills and senior Courtney Brewer contributing seven kills in the balanced attack. Freshman Kira Merkle notched six kills in the middle.

The Bulldogs hit .259 for the night with 42 kills and only 12 attack errors on 116 attempts compared to LSSU's -.016 hitting figure. The Lakers totaled 22 kills, but had 24 errors on 128 attacks.

Ferris State also came up with 66 digs, including a match-high 21 from libero Lauren Helsen. Morgan Ross added 10 digs while both Cappel and O'Connell posted nine each. Senior setter Maeve Grimes recorded 31 assists in the win.

Finally, FSU had two aces with nine service mistakes and came up with a solo block along with four block assists in the match.

Amanda Reid paced Lake Superior State with six kills in the setback and Abby Beachnau had 16 digs.

Ferris State is back in action on Saturday (Sept. 21) as FSU visits Saginaw Valley State for a 2 p.m. (ET) GLIAC match in University Center, Mich.
