Ferris State Rolls To Fourth-Straight Sweep By Beating NMU In Weekend Opener

Big Rapids, Mich. - Ferris State University women's volleyball, which is ranked 16th in the country, rolled to its fourth-straight victory as the Bulldogs topped Northern Michigan 3-0 to open a weekend homestand on Friday (Oct. 4) night inside the Ewigleben Sports Arena.

The Bulldogs posted a 25-16, 25-13, 25-16 win over the Wildcats to move to 11-3 overall this year and 5-1 in the GLIAC.

Along with winning its fourth-straight overall, the Bulldogs also stayed perfect at 8-0 on their home floor this campaign.

Senior hitter Allyson Cappel and junior Katie O'Connell both generated a team-high tying 10 kills in the win while freshman middle hitter Kira Merkle notched six. Cappel's 10 kills came on 16 attempts with no errors while Merkle's six came on 10 attempts with no mistakes.

Overall, FSU hit .308 for the evening with only seven errors on 39 kills and 104 total attacks. The Bulldogs also came up with 55 digs while totaling six service aces and two solo blocks.

O'Connell and libero Nina Gorgijevska both compiled 14 digs apiece for FSU while setter Maeve Grimes had 24 assists.

Ferris State also limited Northern Michigan to a .027 attack figure as the Wildcats totaled 23 errors. NMU had 53 digs, two blocks and a single ace. Lizzy Stark paced the visitors with a team-high nine kills.

The Bulldogs will host Michigan Tech in a battle between the two top teams in the GLIAC North Division standings on Saturday (Oct. 5) starting at 3 p.m. (ET) in Big Rapids. MTU is also 11-3 overall and holds a one-match lead over the Bulldogs in conference play with a perfect 6-0 GLIAC mark entering the afternoon showdown.
