Ferris State Volleyball Pulls Out Five-Set Victory At Wayne State

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's volleyball squad pulled out a tight 3-2 road win over Wayne State on Friday (Oct. 25) evening in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action in Detroit.

FSU fell in the opening set 25-18 before taking the second and third frames 25-15 and 25-22. WSU fought back and won the fourth 25-20, but the Bulldogs recorded a 15-9 decision in the deciding set to earn the victory.

Junior Katie O'Connell produced a season-high 23 kills for the Bulldogs while adding 19 digs overall. Meanwhile, senior Allyson Cappel notched 15 kills and 12 digs with senior Courtney Brewer contributing 13 kills and 13 digs in the win.

The Bulldogs also got 50 assists from senior setter Maeve Grimes along with 32 digs by Nina Gorgijevska.

FSU was held to a .184 attack figure, but came up with 92 digs to go with 10 block assists and three solo blocks. The Bulldogs also had five service aces.

Wayne State compiled a .195 attack figure with 85 digs, 20 block assists and six solo blocks, but had only a single ace and 10 service mistakes.

The Warriors were led by Madelyn Krenz' team-high 17 kills. Both Julia Malewicz and Taylor Wagner had 20 digs apiece.

With the win, Ferris State improved to 17-4 overall this season and 9-1 in the GLIAC.

The Bulldogs will visit Ashland on Saturday (Oct. 26) for a 5 p.m. (ET) league contest in Ashland, Ohio.
