Bulldog Volleyball Celebrates Senior Day With Sweep Over Lake Superior State

Big Rapids, Mich. - Nationally 20th-ranked Ferris State Volleyball celebrated Senior Day in a big way as the Bulldogs stormed past visiting Lake Superior State 3-0 in the regular-season home finale on Saturday (Nov. 2) at the Ewigleben Sports Arena in Big Rapids.

The Bulldogs topped the Lakers in their last home match of the regular-season by a 25-14, 25-10 and 25-19 count while improving to 19-5 overall and 11-2 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

FSU recognized senior hitters Allyson Cappel and Courtney Brewer along with senior setter Maeve Grimes and libero Lauren Helsen prior to the contest. Together, the quartet has helped lead FSU to nearly 100 wins along with three league titles and NCAA bids in their collegiate careers to date.

Cappel led a balanced Bulldog attack with eight kills and seven digs while both Brewer and junior hitter Katie O'Connell totaled five kills and 13 digs apiece. Grimes notched 33 assists and six digs with libero Nina Gorgijevska recording 10 digs. Morgan Ross chipped in with six kills overall.

Ferris State hit .273 for the day with 38 kills and only eight errors in the victory. The Bulldogs also totaled 59 digs with six solo blocks, four block assists and four aces overall.

Meanwhile, Lake Superior State was limited to a -.038 attack figure as the Lakers had 23 hitting errors as compared to only 19 kills on 106 total attempts. They finished with 53 digs, 10 block assists and five aces overall in dropping to 8-16 on the year and 2-11 in the GLIAC.

With the win, the Bulldogs are now only a half-match behind Michigan Tech in the GLIAC North Division race. FSU will visit Michigan Tech on Friday, Nov. 8, for a 5 p.m. (ET) league encounter in Houghton before facing Northern Michigan on Saturday, Nov. 9, starting at 4 p.m. (ET) in Marquette.
