Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's volleyball squad battled back and advanced to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament Semifinals with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Northwood in the quarterfinal round on Friday (April 9) at Hamilton Gymnasium in University Center.
The fourth-seeded Bulldogs fell behind 2-1 in the match and trailed late in the fourth set before rallying back to garner the win over the fifth-seeded Timberwolves.
With the triumph, FSU advances to Saturday's (April 10) semifinals and will face top-seeded Michigan Tech at 4 p.m. (ET) at O'Neill Arena on the Saginaw Valley State campus.
The Bulldogs dropped the opening set 25-20 before coming back to win the second 25-18. However, Northwood earned a 25-19 win in the third, but the Bulldogs came back to garner a 25-22 decision in the fourth and then controlled the fifth set, winning 15-10.
Senior outside hitter Katie O'Connell tallied a match-high 17 kills for the Bulldogs with 21 digs while middle hitter Samantha Hermann compiled 14 kills. FSU also got 12 kills from freshman hitter Keona Salesman with 10 by middle hitter Kira Merkle.
Overall, FSU hit .176 for the match and limited Northwood to a .168 figure. The Bulldogs had 88 digs with seven blocks and five aces compared to NU's 97 digs, 10 blocks and six aces.
Ferris State's Nina Gorgijevska had 27 digs with Morgan Ross adding 16 and freshman Kaylee Maat 11 in addition to the 21 from O'Connell. Maat also had 58 assists and Gorgijevska compiled three aces from the service line.
Northwood was led by Venera Kadriu, who had 16 kills and 20 digs. Macy Lintz compiled 52 assists and Lauren Bell contributed 22 digs.
The Bulldogs improved to 11-4 overall with the win while NU fell to 8-5 overall.
The winner of Saturday's semifinal match advances to the GLIAC Tournament Championship match set for Sunday (April 11) at 1 p.m. (ET) in University Center.
