University Center, Mich. - The Ferris State University football team completed the opening month of the 2014 season with a perfect mark as the Bulldogs rolled to a 47-13 league road win over Saginaw Valley State on Saturday (Sept. 27) night to start 4-0 for the first time since 1995.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 34-6 lead over the Cardinals at Harvey Randall Wickes Memorial Stadium en route to the decisive win as they won their eighth consecutive contest dating back to last year.

Junior quarterback Jason Vander Laan engineered the Bulldog attack by completing 20-of-27 passes for 257 yards and four scores. He also ran for 109 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries in the FSU victory as the nationally 14th-ranked Bulldogs moved to 3-0 in conference action.

Vander Laan engineered a 75-yard Bulldog march in the opening quarter that took 10 plays before scoring on a two-yard TD run to give FSU an early 6-0 edge only five minutes into the contest.

Then, with 2:37 to play in the first period, he scored from four yards out as FSU drove 85 yards in eight plays to make it 13-0 after the opening stanza.

The Bulldogs increased their lead to 20-0 early in the second period when sophomore linebacker Anthony Darkangelo intercepted a SVSU pass and raced 30-yards to the endzone on the pick six to put the FSU defense in the scoring column.

Ferris State jumped the edge to 27-0 with 4:21 left in the half when Vander Laan hooked up with sophomore wideout Shakur Sanders on a 34-yard scoring play to finish a five-play, 70-yard FSU drive.

After Saginaw Valley State found the endzone for the first time on a 12-yard toss from quarterback Keith Moore to Allante Gardner, the Bulldogs responded by driving 75 yards in only four plays in the final minute of the half. Vander Laan found redshirt freshman Jajuan Pollock on a 56-yard scoring toss to end the half, giving FSU a 34-6 lead.

The Bulldogs picked up right where they left off in the third quarter when Vander Laan found Kenny Feyh from 13-yards out for his first career TD catch with 9:45 left in the third. The completion finished a 58-yard FSU drive.

Feyh then found the endzone again with 1:32 left in the period as Vander Laan drove FSU 74 yards in 12 plays for the Bulldogs' final score.

Saginaw Valley State produced the only points of the final quarter on a lengthy 93-yard jaunt capped by an eight-yard Josh Holton scoring run.

Ferris State rolled up 562 yards of total offense, including 290 on the ground and 272 in the air. The Bulldogs also compiled 28 first downs to 18 for SVSU.

Defensively, the Bulldogs held the winless Cardinals to 287 total yards as SVSU ran for 142 yards on 30 carries and Moore completed 17-of-29 throws for 145 yards and a TD.

Along with Vander Laan, tailback Kitwana Clark rambled for 60 yards on the ground to help the Bulldog cause while Sanders caught eight passes for a game-high 115 yards and a TD. Feyh grabbed six balls for 59 yards and two scores.

Redshirt freshman KC Zenner made nine tackles to lead the Bulldogs while Devonte McGregor and Nick Huckabay both made six stops.

Holton led SVSU with 85 yards rushing while Andrew Dillon had five catches for 39 yards.
