Ferris State Claims 14th-Straight Win By Beating SVSU For Second Time This Year

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's basketball team extended its winning streak to 14 consecutive games with an 89-72 victory over the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals on Thursday (Feb. 2) night inside FSU's Jim Wink Arena.

Ferris State senior guard Quentin Ruff led the Bulldogs with 21 points as five Bulldogs scored 13 or more in the contest. Sophomore center Zach Hankins and sophomore forward Markese Mayfield each posted a double-double in strong efforts.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first half and slowed Ferris State early, but the Bulldogs were able to pull ahead 40-33 by the half as FSU shot 42.9 percent from the filed in the opening stage of the game.

In the second half, Ferris State heated up and shot 55.6 percent from the field and 4-of-8 from beyond the arc, owning a 49-39 scoring differential in the final half of regulation.

In double-digit point figures for the Bulldogs, sophomore forward Markese Mayfield had 18 while Hankins and junior guard Drew Cushingberry notched 15 apiece with junior guard Peter Firlik puting up 13 points.

Hankins dominated the glass, pulling down 17 rebounds, seven of which were offensive boards, and was a force defensively as the nation's leader in blocks added four more to his resume.

Mayfield also had 10 rebounds with three on the offensive glass.

Ferris State won the rebound battle 49-40 over the Cardinals with all but two Bulldogs earning at least one in the contest.

The Bulldogs also dominated 50-36 in the paint and had 26 second chance points in the game.

The Cardinals were led by the 22 points and 10 rebounds of C.J. Turnage, who also had four blocks and four assists for SVSU. Mike Wells also had 18 points for Saginaw Valley State.

With the win, Ferris State improved to 19-3 overall and 13-2 atop the GLIAC. The Bulldogs continue to hold a two-game lead in the conference. 

Ferris State is back in action Saturday (Feb. 4) as the Bulldogs make a trip to Detroit to take on the Wayne State Warriors for the second time this season at 3 p.m. (ET).

Following Saturday's road tilt in the Motor City, the Bulldogs will then play four of their final five regular-season contests at home inside Wink Arena.
