Slow Start Too Much To Overcome For Bulldogs In GLIAC Home Setback To Davenport

Big Rapids, Mich. - A slow start was too much to overcome for the Ferris State University men's basketball squad as the Bulldogs suffered a 87-72 setback to visiting Davenport on Saturday (Jan. 5) in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) home tilt at Jim Wink Arena.

The Bulldogs, who were coming off an impressive league road win at rival Grand Valley State on Thursday evening, had their six-game winning streak stopped by Davenport, which notched its 11th win of the year.

Ferris State fell behind in the early minutes as the Panthers built a 38-30 halftime lead. FSU managed to trim the deficit down to a single possession in the second half, but the Panthers eventuall held on for the win to snap FSU's 34-game homecourt winning streak dating back to the 2016-17 season.

Davenport got a game-high 24 points from Avery Hudson to go with 18 points off the bench by Robbie Bramhill in the win as the two combined to make seven three-point baskets. DU's Dyllon Hudson-Emery added 14 points while Khadim Dieng added 12 points and Janeau Joubert tallied 11 points in the victory.

Ferris State received a team-best 21 points from junior guard D'angelo Hughes, who hit on five-of-11 three's. Both junior forward Cole Walker and senior guard DeShaun Thrower added 13 points apiece.

The Bulldogs shot 42.4% overall and went eight-of-24 (33.3%) from long range along with 14-of-19 (73.7%) at the line.

Meanwhile, Davenport converted at a 50.8% clip and made nine-of-25 (36.0%) three's in addition 18-of-23 (78.3%) free throws.

Both teams finished with 34 rebounds with FSU totaling 11 offensive caroms, but DU held a 16-6 margin in second chance production.

The Panthers also forced 20 FSU turnovers and outscored the Bulldogs 31-13 in points off turnovers, including a 20-0 margin in the first half alone.

Overall, the Bulldogs finished with 10 steals and three blocks to go with 17 assists as compared to Davenport's 11 steals and 21 assists.

With the setback, FSU fell to 11-6 overall and 3-3 in the GLIAC, but remains tied for first place in the GLIAC North Division standings. Davenport improved to 11-2 overall and 4-2 in GLIAC play.

The Bulldogs will be back in action next weekend as they travel to Michigan's Upper Peninsula for two league road games. FSU first visits Michigan Tech on Thursday (Jan. 10) for a 7:30 p.m. (ET) league tilt in Houghton before facing Northern Michigan on Saturday (Jan. 12) at 3 p.m. (ET) in Marquette.
