Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's basketball squad sent out a stellar senior class in style on Saturday (Feb. 22) as the Bulldogs pulled away for a 69-60 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) home win over Parkside before a large crowd at Jim Wink Arena.
In FSU's final regular-season home contest, the Bulldogs honored five senior standouts prior to the contest and eventually outscored UWP 35-29 in the final 20 minutes after building a three-point halftime margin.
The win lifted the Bulldogs to 23-6 overall this year and 13-6 in the GLIAC while capping off a weekend home sweep in the final two regular-season home contests of the year.
Ferris State's Senior Day festivities paid tribute to standout seniors Ethan Erickson, Jimmy Scholler, Reece Hazelton, Deng Reng and Kenny Turner, who combined to form one of the winningest groups in school history.
The senior class came up big win the win as Hazelton notched a team-high 22 points on nine-of-11 shooting for FSU. Erickson added 10 points in the win while Scholler dished out seven assists and Reng recorded four points and five boards while helping hold UWP's Jack Rose to one-of-12 shooting and only two points on the defensive end.
Along with the group of seniors, the Bulldogs also got 14 points from freshman Jaxson Whitaker, who went four-of-five from the three-point line. The Bulldogs went 10 deep in the lineup and all 10 scored and had big contributions in the victory.
Overall, Ferris State shot 41.8% from the field and made seven-of-17 (41.2%) three's in addition to 16-of-19 (84.2%) free throws. UWP was limited to 36.2% shooting and only eight-of-12 (66.7%) at the foul line to go with a 10-of-32 (31.3%) effort from long range.
Both teams finished with 36 rebounds and FSU had only six turnovers in comparison with the eight for Parkside, which fell to 14-12 on the year and 11-7 in the GLIAC. The Bulldogs did own a 19-9 margin in second chance scoring and an 11-2 edge in points off turnovers.
Parkside got a game-high 24 points form Josiah Palmer along with 14 points off the bench from Cameron Mallory in the setback.
The Bulldogs will visit Wayne State on Thursday (Feb. 27) evening for a 7:30 p.m. (ET) league tip in Detroit before closing out the regular-season on Saturday (March 1) at Saginaw Valley State starting at 3 p.m. (ET).
