Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's golf team opened action in the 2014 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships by shooting a 297 team score on Friday (Oct. 10) at Cherry Blossom Golf Course in Georgetown, Ky.
The Bulldogs are in 11th place overall following day one of the three-day event on the par 72 course. However, competition is tight as only 14 total strokes seperate FSU and clubhouse leader Grand Valley State, which posted a 283 figure in the opening round.
Behind GVSU was Malone in second place (284) with Walsh third (286), Tiffin fourth (289) and Lake Superior State fifth (291) in the top five overall.
FSU's Chris Eaton is presently tied for 46th overall with a four-over par 76 score followed by Cody Simons in a share of 57th place with a 77 score. Finally, Zak Kiefer rounded out the Bulldog lineup with a 78 in the first round.
Findlay's Dustin Lieber recorded a five-under par 67 and holds the first day lead in the individual competition.
The low four of five scores will count towards the respective team score for each squad.
The second round action will begin on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. (ET) with Sunday's final round of action slated for a 8:30 a.m. (ET) start. All rounds are weather and frost permitting.
Ferris State earned runner-up honors two years at the 2012 GLIAC Men's Golf Championship before placing sixth a year ago in 2013. Overall, the Bulldogs have captured 19 GLIAC Men's Golf Championships in school history.
