Ferris State Men's Golf Takes Part In NCAA National Championships This Week
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's golf squad will compete in the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championships this week, May 20-24, at The Resort at Glade Springs in Daniels, W.Va.
The Bulldogs will be making their 16th all-time national championships appearance and second berth in three years after placing third overall at the 2019 NCAA Midwest/Central Super Regional last week in Hot Springs, Ark.
Ferris State will be one of 20 teams from across the country competing in the national championships and among two qualifiers from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). The finals will be hosted by the Mountain East Conference.
At the National Championships, all 20 advancing teams and eight individuals will complete 54 holes of stroke play. Following 54 holes of stroke play, an individual champion will be declared along with finishers 2-10 based on cumulative total score and any applicable tiebreakers. The top eight teams after 54 holes of play will be placed into a bracket and seeded based on 54-hole scores for the medal/match play portion of the competition to determine the team champion.
FSU will be joined at the national championships by Arkansas Tech, Trevecca Nazarene, Grand Valley State, Florida Southern, Saint Leo (Fla.), Lincoln Memorial, Sonoma State, South Carolina-Aiken, Dixie State, UC San Diego, Cal State Monterey Bay, Lynn, West Florida, Barry, Southern New Hampshire, Bentley, Wilmington, Lindenwood and Missouri-St. Louis.
The Bulldogs will begin competition on Monday afternoon starting at 12:55 p.m. (ET). The 54-hole stroke play portion of the event runs thru Wednesday with the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of the Medal/Match competition for those advancing teams taking place on Thursday. The final round of the team competition takes place on Friday.
The championships will be contested at the Resort at Glade Springs, a par 72 course measuring 7,114 yards.
Two years ago, in 2017, the Bulldogs earned runner-up honors in the 2017 NCAA-II Midwest/Central Super Regional in Kearney, Neb., before going on to a national quarterfinal finish under head coach Kyle Wittenbach.
Last year, current FSU senior golfer Andrew Hammett was an individual qualifer for the NCAA Super Regional Championships, which makes this the 17th-straight year in which the Bulldogs have had representation in the NCAA Tournament. The 17-year streak of NCAA Championship representation in men's golf ranks as one of the longest active stretches in the country.
