Ferris State Places Second To Move To Sunday's Semifinals At GLIAC Men's Golf Championships

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's golf team advanced to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Semifinals and the medal match championship by placing second overall in stroke play competition on Saturday (April 17) at the Stoatin Brae Golf Club in Augusta, Mich.

The Bulldogs posted an impressive 279 score in Saturday's second round of the 36-hole stroke play event, finishing with a two-under par 566 figure for the two days of competition. FSU trailed only stroke play champion Grand Valley State, which finished with a 546 total (-22).

Along with Grand Valley State and FSU, third-place finisher Saginaw Valley State (572) and Ashland (576) with advance to the league semifinals set for Sunday morning. The winners from the medal match semifinals will then square off in the league final later in the day.

Ferris State's Thomas Hursey carded a 134 total in stroke play action and placed tied for second overall. He shot a 66 on the par 71 course in the first round before coming back with a 68 in Saturday's final 18 holes. He trailed only GVSU's Nick Krueger, who was the individual winner at 132 for the tournament.

FSU's Adam Arif Madzri placed fourth overall with a 136 total, firing a 66 on Saturday after an initial round of 70 on Friday.

The Bulldogs' Joshua Jeffords shot a 79 in the first round, but came back with a three-under par 68 on Saturday to place tied for 26th with a 147 figure.

Next in line for the Bulldogs was Trent Barth, who shot a 77 on Saturday on the heels of a 73 on Friday, for a 150 total, coming in tied for 32nd overall.

Finally, Nathan Kraynyk posted back-to-back 78's for a 156 total and finished tied for 41st individually.

The 2021 GLIAC Championships continue the format established two years ago as each league school competed in the 36 holes of stroke play. The low four of five scores counted towards the respective team score for each squad.

Following Saturday's round, the top four teams will now advance to head-to-head medal play on Sunday with a bracket format similar to the current format utilized at the NCAA Championships. The two winning teams following semifinal-round play will advance to the finals in which a GLIAC Champion will be crowned.

Action gets underway on Sunday morning for the semifinals.
