Ferris State Men's Golf Takes Seventh In First Event Of The Season

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's golf squad opened action this fall with a seventh-place overall team finish at the Carl Arendsen Invitational hosted by Grand Valley State University at The Meadows Golf Course in Allendale.

The Bulldogs shot a three-round score of 897 overall in the two-day event, which took place on Sunday and Monday. FSU opened with a 307 team score, but lowered its figure to 294 in round two and 296 in the final round. The event marked FSU's debut competition under first-year head coach and alum Sam Stark.

Overall, Ferris State finished +45 for the tournament and the Bulldogs were only four strokes out of a top five team finish.

The event was won by host GVSU (-4) with Findlay second (+10) followed by Indianapolis (+18), Wayne State (+29) and Tiffin (+41) in the top five.

FSU was led by Cannon Risner, who placed 16th overall in the field with a 219 individual figure. He shot back-to-back 71 scores for even par the first round rounds before closing with a 77 on the par 71 course measuring 7,026 yards.

Ferris State's Mitchell Geik came in tied for 28th overall with a 226 figure as he shot a 76 in round one followed by a 79 in the middle round and a 71 in the final round.

Next in line for the Bulldogs was Zach Koerner in a share of 40th place with a 230 total. Koerner posted a 85 in the first round, but lowered his score by 12 strokes to 73 in round two and then fired a 72 in the final 18 holes of play.

The Bulldogs' Josh Jeffords wound up tied for 47th with a 231 total on rounds of 81, 74 and 76 with Trent Barth shooting a 235 score. After carding a 79 in the first round, he came back with scores of 76 and 80 over the final two rounds of action.

Ferris State also had a pair of golfers compete as individuals with Nathan Kraynyk coming in tied for 28th at 226 on scores of 74, 80 and 72. Meanwhile Shayne Beaufait placed tied for 34th at 229 on rounds of 79, 73 and 77.

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 11-12, at the Al Watrous Intercollegiate hosted by Saginaw Valley State University in Bay City, Mich.
