Impressive Second Round Helps Ferris State Climb Leaderboard On Final Day At SVSU Spring Invite

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's tennis squad improved its score by 22 strokes and climbed three spots on the leaderboard in the final day of action on Sunday (March 20) at the Saginaw Valley State Spring Invitational, finishing in a tie for seventh place overall in a large field at the event hosted at Kearney Hill Golf Links in Lexington, Ky.

FSU carded a 292 team score over the final 18 holes of competition on Sunday on the par 72 course measuring 7,023 yards. The Bulldogs, who shot a 314 figure in the first round on Saturday, closed the event at 606 or 30 strokes over par, tying Northwood for seventh place in the 19-team field. Ferris State was only four over par in the final round.

The tournament was won by Southern Indiana at 588 overall followed by Findlay at 589 for the two days of action.

Ferris State's Thomas Hursey finished among the top 10 overall individually, placing tied for ninth in the field with a 146 total. He shot a two-under par 70 in the final round after opening with a 76 on Saturday.

FSU's Joshua Jeffords lowered his score by 10 strokes in the second round, shooting a 71 on the heels of his opening round 81 to place tied for 34th in the field at 152 for the tournament.

Meanwhile, Zach Koerner fired a 75 in round two and finished tied for 37th at 153 overall. He had shot a first-round 78 on Saturday.

The Bulldogs' Nathan Kraynyk wound up tied for 48th in the field at 155 for the two days as he carded a 76 on Sunday in round two, which was three strokes better than his opening-round 79 mark.

Finally, Shayne Beaufait came in tied for 81st in the field with a 160 figure, notching a 79 in Sunday's play following his first-round 81 score.

The Bulldogs also had two golfers compete as individuals with Jason Martinus placing tied for 74th and Andrew Proctor coming in tied for 81st. Martinus shot a 79 in round one and an 80 in round two for a 159 total while Proctor carded an 80 in both rounds for a 160 figure.

Ferris State will next compete in the Findlay Spring Invite, which is also slated to be played in Lexington, on March 28-29.
