Two-Time Defending Champion Ferris State Second After First Round At GLIAC Men's Golf Championships

Big Rapids, Mich. - Two-Time defending Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Champion Ferris State opened the 2022 GLIAC Men's Golf Championships in strong fashion on Friday (April 15) as the Bulldogs carded a 285 team score and sit second overall entering the second round in Augusta, Mich.

FSU finished the opening 18 holes of play at one-over par for the tournament and trail first day leader Davenport by four strokes heading into the second round as DU posted a three-under 281 figure. Ferris State is three strokes in front of Grand Valley State, which sits third after a 288 in the opening round on the par 71 course.

The Bulldogs' Thomas Hursey presently ranks first on the individual leaderboard with a 67 in the first 18 holes. Meanwhile, FSU's Joshua Jeffords shot a 69 in round one and is currently tied for second overall in the field.

Ferris State's Nathan Kraynyk also finished the first day among the top 10 overall as he came in tied for ninth with a 72 score. Teammate Andrew Proctor is tied for 31st with his opening round 77 figure and Zach Koerner shot an 80, which was good for a share of 44th place following the first round.

The 2022 GLIAC Championships continue the format established in the recent past with each league school competing in 36 holes of stroke play with a single round per day on both Friday and Saturday. The low four of five scores count towards the respective team score for each squad.

Following round two, the top four teams will advance to head-to-head medal play on Sunday with a bracket format similar to the current format utilized at the NCAA Championships. The two winning teams following semifinal-round play will advance to the finals in which a GLIAC Champion will be crowned.

Golfers can play 18 holes a day for six days, without ever playing the same hole twice. The men are playing this year's event on the Stoatin Brae Golf Club course measuring 6,742 yards.

Overall, the Bulldog men's golf squad has captured 21 GLIAC Men's Golf Championships in school history and is the two-time defending league champion.

Round two play is set to start on Saturday at 11 a.m. (ET).
