Ferris State Men's Golf Advances To Sunday's GLIAC Match Play Semifinals

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's golf team advanced to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Semifinals and the medal match championship round for the third consecutive time by placing third overall in stroke play competition on Saturday (April 16) at the Stoatin Brae Golf Club in Augusta, Mich.

The Bulldogs posted a 295 team score in Saturday's second round of the 36-hole stroke play event, finishing with a 16-over par 584 figure for the two days of competition. FSU finished behind only stroke play champion Davenport (-6) and second-place finisher Grand Valley State, which was only a stroke better than FSU at +15 for the event.

As one of the top four teams, the Bulldogs will advance to Sunday's semifinal action along with DU, GVSU and fourth-place finisher Northwood (+18). The winners from the medal match semifinals will then square off in the league final later in the day.

Ferris State's Thomas Hursey carded a 139 total in stroke play action and placed second overall. He shot a 67 on the par 71 course in the first round before coming back with a 72 in Saturday's final 18 holes. He trailed only Davenport's Bradley Mogire, who was the individual winner at 138 for the tournament.

The Bulldogs' Joshua Jeffords also placed among the top 10 individual finishers, firing a two-day 147 total at +5 overall. He opened with a 69 in round one and finished with a 78 on Saturday.

Next in line for FSU was Nathan Kraynyk, who placed tied for 15th in the field with a 149 total (+7). Kraynyk shot a 72 in the opening round and closed with a 77 in round two.

Ferris State's Zach Koerner earned a share of 27th place for the tournament by notching a 152 score (+10) with a first-round 80 followed by a one-over par 72 in Saturday's round.

Finally, FSU's Andrew Proctor wound up tied for 36th with a 155 (+13) score, shooting a 78 in the second round after opening with a 77 in round one.

The 2022 GLIAC Championships continue the format established in the recent past as each league school competed in the 36 holes of stroke play. The low four of five scores counted towards the respective team score for each squad.

Following Saturday's round, the top four teams will now advance to head-to-head medal play on Sunday with a bracket format similar to the current format utilized at the NCAA Championships. The two winning teams following semifinal-round play will advance to the finals in which a GLIAC Champion will be crowned.

Action gets underway on Sunday morning for the semifinals.

Overall, the Bulldog men's golf squad has captured 21 GLIAC Men's Golf Championships in school history and is the two-time defending league champion.
