Bulldog Hockey Bounces Back To Earn Weekend Split

Big Rapids, Mich. - The nationally 18th-ranked Ferris State University men's ice hockey team earned a weekend split with Lake Superior State as the Bulldogs posted a 2-1 win over the Lakers on Saturday (Nov. 10) night at Taffy Abel Ice Arena in Sault Ste Marie.

The Bulldogs notched the first goal of the evening when junior center Cory Kane scored his third goal of the season on the power-play at 3:05 of the opening period with the pass coming from junior right wing Justin DeMartino.

Ferris State was able to stretch its lead to 2-0 over the Lakers going into the second period after DeMartino tallied an even-strength goal at 14:19.  It represented his second goal of the weekend and third of the season. Sophomore defenseman Simon Denis and senior left wing Kyle Bonis were credited with the assists.

However, Lake Superior State scored the lone goal of the second period as Zach Sternberg scored his second goal of the season at 9:44 on the power play with Nick McParland picking up the assist.

Neither the Bulldogs nor the Lakers were able to find the back of the net in the duration of the final period.

Sophomore Bulldog goaltender CJ Motte registered 43 saves on the evening while the Lakers' Kevin Murdock totaled 26 saves. The Lakers totaled 44 shots on the night to 28 for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs had 11 penalties on the evening totaling 31 minutes while the Lakers were called for six penalties totaling 12 minutes.

With the victory, the Bulldogs improved to 4-4-2 on the year along with 3-3-0 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). Meanwhile, with the loss the Lakers now have an overall record of 5-5-0 with a 3-3-0 mark in the CCHA.

This weekend's action marked the final regular-season series between the Bulldogs and Lakers in CCHA play, but both teams will move to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) next season.

The Bulldogs will be back in action next weekend (Nov. 16-17) as they travel to Bowling Green State to take on the Falcons. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m. (ET) on both Friday and Saturday night.
