Big Rapids, Mich. - The nationally eighth-ranked Ferris State University men's ice hockey squad kept its season-opening momentum going as the Bulldogs skated to a 4-1 exhibition win over visiting Wilfrid Laurier on Friday (Oct. 10) night inside the Ewigleben Ice Arena.
The Bulldogs, who beat Michigan in a top 10 showdown in the season opener last Saturday by a 4-3 score at home, scored only 5:04 into the game and added a pair of third-period goals after the Golden Hawks had trimmed the margin to a single goal early in the final period.
The victory came before an announced crowd of 1,840 fans for the exhibition game on "Season Ticket Holder Appreciation Night" with the FSU players thanking the fans with a number of special postgame events.
Ferris State, which dressed 20 skaters and three goals for the tilt, opened the contest quickly as Big Rapids sophomore Seth Adams notched an even-strength goal only 5:04 into the game off a feed from freshman Tyler Andrew and junior Dakota Klecha.
The Bulldogs increased their advantage to 2-0 at 10:27 of the second frame when sophomore Gerald Mayhew recorded a power-play goal assisted by junior defenseman Simon Denis and forward Matt Robertson.
Ferris State senior captain CJ Motte made the start in net and shutout the Golden Hawks thru two periods before giving way to another Big Rapids native in backup goaltender Trace Pennock for the third and final period. Motte made six saves in nearly 40 minutes of action while Pennock came up with 11 saves in 20 minutes between the pipes.
After Motte left the contest, Wilfrid Laurier opened the third period strong as Zach Lorentz netted the Golden Hawks' lone goal of the night only 1:45 into the period. Both Matthew Franczyk and Matt Mwarigha-Dupont earned the helpers on the goal.
However, from there Pennock and the Bulldogs shut the door and FSU came up with a key goal at 15:06 of the third by Mayhew on the power play. His second goal of the game pushed the Ferris State lead back to two goals at 3-1 with Denis earning his second assist of the contest and freshman Andrew Dorantes also receiving an assist.
FSU then tacked on an empty-net goal at 19:38 by senior forward Justin Buzzeo with an assist to sophomore Chad McDonald.
The Bulldogs held a commanding 41-18 advantage in total shots and gave the Golden Hawks only six total shots in the opening two periods of play. Overall, FSU finished two-of-six with the man-advantage while Wilfrid Laurier finished without a goal in three opportunities on the power play.
Ferris State was called for four penalties totaling 11 minutes in the box with the Golden Hawks whistled 10 times for 31 minutes overall.
The outing marked Wilfrid Laurier's second in as many nights following a 5-2 loss on Thursday against Michigan in Ann Arbor.
Mayhew picked up the game's first star by virtue of his two goals while Motte claimed the second star and Adams took home the third.
Ferris State will return to regular-season competition on the road next Friday and Saturday, Oct. 17-18, as FSU ventures to Canton (N.Y.) to face St. Lawrence in non-league play. The action gets underway both nights at 7 p.m.
Following the trip to New York, the Bulldogs return to the Ewigleben Ice Arena to open Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play as the defending league champions on Oct. 24-25 against the Michigan Tech Huskies.
