Big Rapids, Mich. - Nationally 16th-ranked Ferris State University fell short in its quest to complete a weekend road sweep as 20th-ranked Northern Michigan earned a split with a 2-0 win over the Bulldogs on Saturday (Nov. 8) night in the series finale at the Berry Events Center in Marquette.

The Bulldogs, who won the opening game of the two-game set on Friday evening 1-0 via an overtime goal, could not get a shot past NMU goaltender Mathias Dahlstrom in the finale.

Following a scoreless opening period, the Wildcats finally got on the board at 3:43 of the second period when Mitch Jones scored on the power-play off a Darren Nowick assist to give Northern Michigan the game's first lead.

The 1-0 score stood up until 6:53 into the final period when Robbie Payne tallied an even-strength marker with assists credited to Dominik Shine and Ryan Kesti. It would prove to be the final goal of the evening for either team.

Dahlstrom made 24 saves in 60 minutes of work while improving to 6-1-1 on the year.

Meanwhile, for the Bulldogs, senior captain CJ Motte totaled 25 saves while playing 58:49 in net for Ferris State.

Overall, the Wildcats held a 27-24 edge in total shots for the evening. NMU tallied six shots in the first period, 10 in the second and 11 in the third. FSU had 10 shots in period one before notching five in the middle frame and nine in the final 20 minutes of action.

Northern Michigan was called for five penalties totaling 10 minutes in the box, but FSU was unable to capitalize on five power-play chances. FSU had four infractions for eight minutes with the Wildcats finishing one-of-four with the man-advantage.

Senior defenseman Jason Binkley led the Bulldogs with six total shots in the contest while sophomore Chad McDonald had four on the night. Payne paced NMU with four scoring opportunities.

With the setback, the Bulldogs dropped to 4-5-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the WCHA. NMU improved to 6-1-1 overall and 3-1-0 in league action with the victory after the Bulldogs had handed them their first loss of the year in Friday's opener.

Ferris State returns home to begin a four-game homestand at the Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids.

FSU will first host Alaska-Anchorage in a special Thursday-Friday series on Nov. 13-14. The Thursday opener will mark Veteran's Appreciation Night with the Bulldogs donning special camo jerseys for the fundraising initiative. Friday will be "Ladies Night" with special ticket discounts and more for women.
