Ferris State Hockey Caps Weekend Sweep As Motte Posts NCAA-Leading 13th Career Shutout

Big Rapids, Mich. - Ferris State University completed its first weekend sweep of the 2014-15 men's ice hockey campaign as the Bulldogs recorded a 4-0 shutout over visiting Alaska Anchorage to wrap up a two-game set on Friday (Nov. 14) night before a crowd of more than 2,000 fans inside FSU's Ewigleben Ice Arena.

Senior goaltender CJ Motte posted his NCAA active career leading 13th shutout while FSU scored at least one goal in each of the three periods of action to beat the Seawolves in Big Rapids. The win, coupled with a decisive 10-2 triumph in Thursday's opener, enabled FSU to notch the back-to-back victories of its WCHA counterpart as the Bulldogs began a four-game league homestand.

Overall, for the weekend Ferris State outscored Alaska Anchorage 14-2 and the Bulldogs scored three more goals in the two games than they had all season over their first nine outings prior to the Alaska Anchorage series.

Ferris State opened the scoring in the first period as junior forward Matt Robertson tallied the game's first goal at 18:51 of the opening period off an assist from sophomore Gerald Mayhew. The goal was Robertson's fourth of the 2014-15 campaign and would prove to be the eventual game winner.

The FSU lead grew to 2-0 at the end of the second frame when Mayhew notched his own goal at 19:21 of the middle period on the power play. Both senior defenseman Jason Binkley and freshman defenseman Austin Kosack tallied the helpers.

The BUlldogs tacked on a pair of goals in the final 20 minutes of action to account for the final margin. Freshman forward Andrew Mayer scored his first collegiate marker at 17:21 of the third off assists from sophomore defenseman Ryan Lowney and junior forward Kenny Babinski.

The final FSU goal came on a short-handed, empty-netter from senior forward Justin Buzzeo at 18:35 with Babinski providing his second assist of the evening.

Motte improved to 6-5-0 overall in net for the Bulldogs and claimed the game's first star by making 17 saves in 59:38 of action.

Meanwhile, on the opposite end of the ice, Olivier Mantha took the loss for Alaska Anchorage despite stopping 35 shots. FSU held a 39-17 edge for the evening in total attempts, which came on the heels of a 40-30 advantage in Thursday's opener.

In Friday's finale, the Bulldogs had a contest-best 17 shots in the initila period and followed it up with 11 total shots in each of the final two frames. UAA had only five shots in the first period, four in the second and eight in the third.

Overall, Ferris State finished with five penalties for 10 minutes while the Seawolves were called for seven infractions totaling 14 minutes in the box.

FSU finished one-of-four on the power play and held UAA without a goal in two tries with the man-advantage.

Along with Motte, Robertson received the second star for FSU via his game-winner and Mayhew took home third star honors after his two-point performance.

Friday night's victory came in front of the 55th-straight sellout of FSU's "Dawg Pound" student section. It was also Ferris State's sixth win in a row over Anchorage. Overall, the Bulldogs are currently 19-2-1 in their last 22 home contests at the Ewigleben Ice Arena dating back to last year.

The FSU win came on Friday evening as FSU welcomed first-year WCHA Commissioner Bill Robertson to the Ewigleben Ice Arena for the first time. Robertson continued his tour of league campuses and had an opportunity to interract with local and regional media members on Friday afternoon along with various campus administrators and representatives prior to and during the evening game.

FSU will next host Alabama Huntsville in league play on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 21-22, in Big Rapids. Both games get underway at 7:07 p.m. (ET).
