Ferris State Falls To Alaska Anchorage In Series Finale Saturday Night
Big Rapids, Mich. — Led by goaltender Olivier Mantha and two goals from forward Tad Kozun, the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves (6-3-1, 3-2-1 WCHA) defeated the Ferris State Bulldogs (5-5-2, 4-4-0 WCHA) 5-0 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play at Sullivan Arena in Anchorage, Alaska on Saturday (Nov. 14) to split the weekend series between the two schools.
Ferris State's record is now at .500 for the season after the split, with an overall mark of 5-5-2 and a conference showing at 4-4-0.
The Seawolves struck less than two minutes into the contest when Matt Anholt redirected a pass from Mason Mitchell up high and over the glove of FSU redshirt junior goaltender Charles Williams to give UAA a 1-0 lead.
Minutes later Mitchell made it 2-0, scoring at 6:00 of the opening period with an assist from Anholt.
FSU rebounded in the latter half of the frame and finished by outshooting the Seawolves 12-8 total in the period.
After a penalty was whistled to FSU sophomore forward Zach Szajner for interference, Tad Kozun converted on the power play for UAA, extending the Seawolves lead to 3-0.
Just as they did in the first, the Bulldogs outshot Anchorage 9-5 in the middle period, but had a 3-0 deficit after two periods.
In the third, UAA scored twice more on tallies by Kozun and Anholt, extending their lead and putting the game out of reach for the Bulldogs.
UAA netminder Olivier Mantha secured the victory for the Seawolves, stopping all 25 shots he saw in the contest. Williams finished with 20 saves for the Bulldogs in the loss.
The Seawolves went 2-for-5 on the power play, while Ferris State did not score on their only chance with the man-advantage. Sophomore forward Andrew Dorantes and senior forward Kenny Babinski were tied for the team lead in shots on goal, each putting four attempts on net.
FSU will return home next weekend on Nov. 20-21 to face the University of Alaska-Fairbanks in a two-game series at Ewigleben Ice Arena. Both games are scheduled to start at 7:07 p.m.
