Big Rapids, Mich.- The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to the nationally 13th-ranked University of Michigan Wolverines on Saturday (Oct. 15) night before a sellout crowd of 2,516 fans inside FSU's Ewigleben Ice Arena despite nearly doubling UM in shots for the evening.
Sophomore forward Andrew Mayer had the lone Ferris State goal on a power play in the third period to even the contest at a goal apiece while sophomore forward Corey Mackin tallied his first assist of the season in front of a sellout crowd.
The first half of the game went scoreless before the Wolverines struck at 7:05 of the second period on the power play. UM's Jake Slaker scored his first collegiate goal. Dexter Dancs and Alex Kile earned assists on Slaker's goal.
Ferris State evened the contest at 1-1 at 8:37 of the third period when Mayer swatted in a rebound chance on the power play for his first goal of the season. Mackin tallied his first point of the year with an assist while sophomore forward Trevor Recktenwald added his second assist of the year.
However, the Wolverines answered as they scored at 15:32 of the third on the power play to take a 2-1 lead. Sam Piazza scored his third goal of the year, which proved to be the eventual game-winner. Kile earned his second assist of the game with Slaker posting his second point of the game and second assist of the season.
The Bulldogs finished 1-of-7 on the power play with nine shot while the Wolverines went 2-of-5 with the man advantage and also posted nine shots.
Overall, Ferris State outshot Michigan 29-16 for the evening and 8-2 in the final period of play, but were unable to beat Wolverine goaltender Jack LaFontaine a second time.
FSU sophomore goaltender Darren Smith took the loss for Ferris State after making 14 saves on 16 shots.
The Bulldogs took six penalties for 12 minutes in the box while Michigan had eight infractions for 16 total minutes.
The Bulldogs will return to action on Friday, Oct. 21, when they reopen Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play against the Northern Michigan Wildcats at 7:07 p.m. (ET). The contest opens a two-game weekend homestand versus NMU.
