Ferris State Falls In Weekend Opener At Alaska-Anchorage In WCHA Play

Anchorage, Alaska - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team fell by a final score of 4-1 to the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves at the Sullivan Arena in Anchorage on Friday (Jan. 7) night as the two squads opened a Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) weekend series.

Sophomore forward Ryker Killins netted Ferris State's lone goal, his first of the season in the game.

The Seawolves opened the scoring at 14:16 of the first when Nathan Renouf netted a power play goal from Jeremiah Luedtke and Jarrett Brown. Renouf hacked away standing in front of FSU goaltender Darren Smith for the marker.

Ferris State evened the score in the second when Killins scored his first of the season on the power play. Freshman forward Jason Tackett set Killins up from behind the net as Killins drove towards the net and shot one upstairs. Freshman defenseman Joe Rutkowski also was credited with an assist on the goal.

UAA's Alex Jackstadt next scored two goals 29 seconds apart, first at 10:51 of the second from Nils Rygaard and Ludetke and next from Rygaard and Chase Van Allen at 11:20 of the second to put the Seawolves up 3-1.

Mason Mitchell iced the game with the empty net goal with 1:18 remaining from Matt Anholt.

Ferris State and Alaska Anchorage tied in shots on goal 27-27 for the game.

The Bulldogs went 1-of-8 on the power play. The Seawolves went 1-of-7 for the game on the man advantage and both teams took nine penalties on the evening, though Ferris State finished with 29 penalty minutes to Alaska Anchorage's 19.

FSU's Smith made 23 saves on 27 shots in the loss while Olivier Mantha picked up the win with 26 saves on 27 shots for UAA.

Ferris State returns to action on Saturday (Jan. 7) to wrap up the weekend series with Alaska Anchorage at Sullivan Arena with puck drop scheduled for 11:07 p.m. (ET). The game will be carried live via WCHA.TV.
