Ferris State Falls In Weekend Finale As Bulldogs Draw Weekend Split With Beavers

Bemidji, Minn. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team suffered a road setback by a final score of 5-1 on Saturday (Jan. 21) at the Sanford Center against nationally 18th-ranked Bemidji State as the two teams wrapped up a weekend split.

Senior forward Chad McDonald netted the lone goal for Ferris State, his second in as many games.

The Beavers got out to the early lead at 3:53 of the first period when a shot hit the skate of Myles Fitzgerald and hopped over Ferris State sophomore goaltender Darren Smith for a 1-0 BSU lead from Leo Fitzgerald and Justin Baudry.

McDonald evened the contest at 1-1 with his seventh goal of the year at 16:56 of the opening frame on a one-timer from senior forward Jared VanWormer, who earned his 11th assist of the year on the goal.

Bemidji State would net the next four goals to take the contest.

Kyle Bauman scored the eventual game-winner on a puck that hopped off a Ferris State defenseman's glove and into the net at 1:30 of the middle period from Phillip Marinaccio and Dan Billett.

Marinaccio would score on a breakaway at 3:07 of the second from Bauman and Charlie O'Connor to make it a 3-1 game in favor of the Beavers.

BSU made it 4-1 when Gerry Fitzgerald netted his eighth of the year on a sweeping move and shot over the shoulder of Smith from Myles Fitzgerald and Tommy Muck. The fourth Beaver goal chased Smith and ended his night in net at 33 minutes and 23 seconds of the game, as freshman Justin Kapelmaster relieved him.

The Beavers capped the scoring at 44 seconds of the third when Justin Baudry tapped in a pass from Gerry and Leo Fitzgerald to make it 5-1.
