Early Overtime Goal Gives Bowling Green Win Over FSU In National TV Showdown

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team suffered a 3-2 overtime loss at home to the Bowling Green State Falcons in Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play on Friday (Jan. 27) night at the Ewigleben Ice Arena.

Ferris State junior forward Tyler Andrew broke a scoreless streak and netted his second goal of the year while senior forward Jared VanWormer earned his career-high 12th assist in a single-season in the nationally-televised game.

Andrew opened the scoring at 7:02 of the second period, firing a long shot from the top of the faceoff circles past BGSU goaltender Chris Nell. Freshman defenseman Joe Rutkowski earned his 13th assist of the year on the goal with junior forward Zack Szajner earning his second.

Bowling Green evened the game at 7:29 of the second period when Tyler Spezia scored his fifth of the year from John Schilling on a rush into the zone.

FSU senior forward Gerald Mayhew put the Bulldogs up 2-1 at the end of the second with his team-leading 14th goal of the year on a redirect in front of an open net from Corey Mackin (11) and VanWormer (12).

The Falcons would tie the game at 10:17 of the third when Kevin Dufour snuck one past Ferris State freshman goaltender Justin Kapelmaster to make it 2-2 from Sean Walker and Alec Rauhauser.

BGSU's Mark Friedman ended the contest 34 seconds into overtime with a backhand spinning shot that beat Kapelmaster from Brett D'Andrea.

On the power play, the Bulldogs went 0-of-5, with the Falcons going 1-of-6, scoring on a five minute major power play. The Falcons outshot Ferris State 35-23 for the game.

Kapelmaster made 32 saves on 35 shots in the loss for Ferris State while Nell made 21 stops on 23 shots.

Ferris State and Bowling Green wrap up the season series on Saturday (Jan. 28) at 7:07 pm EST at the Ewigleben Ice Arena.
