Six Consecutive Ferris State Goals Give Bulldogs Third-Straight WCHA Victory

Huntsville, Ala. - Six consecutive Ferris State University goals propelled the Bulldogs past the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers by a 6-2 final on Friday night (Nov. 24) as the two Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) foes opened a weekend series at the Von Braun Center.

Senior forward Mitch Maloney netted a natural hat-trick in the third period to go with an assist while redshirt sophomore forward Jasen Fernsler added four points on a goal and three assists in FSU's third consecutive WCHA triumph. Maloney's hat trick was the first for a Bulldog since former standout Garrett Thompson tallied three goals in a contest against Michigan State in 2013.

The Chargers came out firing, scoring twice for an early 2-0 lead, first at 6:31 when Adam Wilcox scored, followed by a Josh Kestner goal at 9:13.

However, Ferris State pulled back within one on freshman forward Liam MacDougall's first collegiate goal at 13:55 of the first from redshirt sophomore defenseman Zach Yoder (1) and freshman forward Lucas Finner (6).

Fernsler knotted the game at 2-2 at 10:49 of the second period for his first goal as a Bulldog from Yoder (2) on a scrum in front of the net.

Junior forward and captain Corey Mackin scored the game-winning goal at 17:25 of the second frame for his third of the year, giving FSU a 3-2 lead with assists going to senior defenseman Tyler Dorantes (2) and Maloney (3).

In the third, it was all Maloney for Ferris State who scored his first at 36 seconds from Fernsler (4) to push the margin to 4-2 in FSU's favor. Maloney then scored his second from sophomore forward Jason Tackett (1) and Fernsler (5) at 7:15 and finished the scoring at 12:34 from Fernsler (6) to account for the 6-2 decision.

With the hat trick, Maloney is one off of his career-high in goals with 11 with 17 games to play in the regular season and ranks second in the WCHA in goal scoring in all games played.

In goal, Ferris State junior goaltender Darren Smith made 31 stops and earned his third victory of the season while UAH's Mark Sinclair made 29 saves in the loss for the Chargers and fell to 0-3-0 on the year.

The Bulldogs outshot the Chargers 35-33 for the night. On the power play, both UAH and FSU went 0-of-5 overall.

Ferris State and Alabama-Huntsville wrap up the two-game season series on Saturday (Nov. 25) at the Von Braun Center with puck drop set for 8:07 p.m. (EST).
