Ferris State Hockey Closes Weekend With Split In Upper Peninsula

Houghton, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team fell to the Michigan Tech Huskies 5-1 at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena on Saturday (Dec. 9) night in Houghton as the two squads wrapped up a Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) weekend series.

Ferris State redshirt sophomore forward Jasen Fernsler scored shorthanded for Ferris State's lone goal.

Fernsler opened the scoring at 15:45 when Michigan Tech goaltender Robbie Beydoun coughed the puck up at the top of the zone on a fumbled clearing effort. The goal was unassisted, and Fernsler's second of the year.

The Huskies, though, scored five consecutive goals to take the contest after that.

MTU's Alex Gillies scored on a breakaway at 18:14 of the first period to even the score at 1-1.

Jake Lucchini scored the game winner at 11:09 of the second period from Gavin Gould and Keegan Ford.

The Huskies scored the game's only power play goal at 14:19 of the second period when Alex Smith scored from Mitch Reinke and Mark Auk.

At 17:01, the Huskies extended their lead to 4-1 on a Dylan Steman goal from Seamus Donohue.

Michigan Tech capped the scoring at 3:14 of the third on a breakaway goal by Jake Jackson.

In goal, Ferris State sophomore Justin Kapelmaster made 21 stops, but was relieved after allowing four goals through 40 minutes. Junior Darren Smith made seven stops in relief.

Shots were nearly even with the Huskies holding a 33-32 advantage for the night.

Ferris State finished 0-of-6 on the power play, while the Huskies went 1-of-4.

Ferris State earned a weekend split and moved alone into fifth place in the WCHA standings on the weekend.

The Bulldogs travel next to Marquette to take on the Northern Michigan Wildcats at the Berry Events Center on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 15-16. Both games get underway at 7 p.m. (ET).
