Big Rapids, Mich. – The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team opened Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play with a 4-0 shutout victory over the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves at Ewigleben Ice Arena on Friday (Oct. 26).
Ferris State freshman netminder Roni Salmenkangas picked up his second collegiate victory and made 27 saves for his first collegiate shutout, while fellow freshman and defenseman Cooper Zech picked up a pair of assists in the game.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring at 11:34 of the first period when freshman forward Hunter Wendt cleaned up a loose rebound for a power play goal and his third goal of the season from Zech (1) and junior defenseman Nate Kallen (3).
Kallen, now on a three game point streak, has four assists over his last three games.
In the second period, the Bulldogs continued their strong special teams play and capitalized on the power play at 7:22 when redshirt junior forward Jasen Fernsler deflected a shot out of mid-air that dipped and slid between the legs of UAA netminder Kris Carlson for a 2-0 Bulldog lead. Kallen picked up his second assist of the game on the initial shot, good for his fourth assist of the year, while Zech picked up his second of the game and the season.
Ferris State netted their third power play goal at 12:42 of the third when senior defenseman Ryker Killins laced a cross-ice feed to redshirt junior forward Craig Pefley who one-timed the puck past a sliding Carlson for a 3-0 Bulldog led. The goal was Pefley's first of the season, and the first assist of the year for Ryker Killins. Senior forward Corey Mackin picked up the secondary assist on the goal, which was his fifth of the season.
