Big Rapids, Mich. – The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team defeated the Michigan State Spartans 4-1 in front of a sold out crowd at the Ewigleben Ice Arena on Saturday (Nov. 3) night in non-conference action.

Ferris State junior defenseman Nate Kallen picked up a pair of assists in the win to run his team-lead in point total to seven (all assists) while freshman goaltender Roni Salmenkangas made 27 stops in a strong outing in goal.

The Bulldogs lept in front and opened the scoring at 3:52 of the opening frame when redshirt junior forward Jasen Fernsler netted his second goal of the season, poking the puck past MSU goaltender Drew DeRidder for a 1-0 lead. Kallen (6) and redshirt junior forward Craig Pefley (2) picked up the assists on Fernsler's goal.

Later, at 11:22 of the first period, redshirt junior forward Oskar Andren fired in his first goal as a Bulldog for a 2-0 lead and what was the eventual game-winning goal while alone at the top of the MSU crease. Redshirt junior defenseman Zach Yoder (4) and sophomore forward Coale Norris (2) earned the assists on Andren's first goal as a Bulldog.

Michigan State cut the Ferris State lead in half at 17:30 of the first period when Logan Lambdin scored his second goal of the season nine seconds into the first Spartan power play of the night from Jake Smith and Sam Saliba to make it a 2-1 game headed into the break.

In the second period, the Bulldogs killed off a pair of penalties and regained their footing midway through the game when sophomore forward Liam MacDougall fired a slapshot past DeRidder on a three-on-two rush for a 3-1 Bulldog edge. Kallen dropped the pass into the high slot to MacDougall for his second assist of the game and seventh of the year.

The Bulldogs capped the scoring when freshman forward Jake Transit lifted in his first collegiate goal, outwaiting a diving DeRidder for the 4-1 final score. Pefley (3) picked up his second assist of the game, while Andren earned his fifth assist and second point of the game.

Ferris State earned the weekend home-and-home split with the Spartans and outshot MSU 34-28. The Spartans went 1-5 on the man advantage while the Bulldogs finished 0-5 with seven shots on goal.

With the victory, the Bulldogs picked up their third consecutive home victory and head back to Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play when they take on the Michigan Tech Huskies, whom the Bulldogs are tied for second in the WCHA standings with early this season. The puck drops on Friday (Nov. 9) at 7:07 p.m. (ET) inside the Ewigleben Ice Arena with Saturday's (Nov. 10) series' finale also at the same time.
