Ferris State Wraps Up Weekend Trip To Alaska With Setback In The WCHA

Fairbanks, Alaska – The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team fell 6-2 to the Alaska Nanooks on Saturday (Dec. 1) at the Carlson Center in Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play.

Ferris State freshman defenseman Cooper Zech finished with a goal and an assist in the game for the Bulldogs.

The Nanooks took a 2-0 lead on goals at 2:31 by Kyle Marino and at 6:22 by Tristan Thompson before the Bulldogs got on the board.

At 8:34 of the first, Ferris State senior forward Corey Mackin ripped in a power play goal for his second goal of the season from junior defenseman Nate Kallen (10) and Zech (8).

Alaska scored two more to build a 4-1 lead at 16:41 of the first when Steven Jandric scored for UAF, followed by Max Newton on the power play at 1:34 of the second period.

The Bulldogs cut the Nanooks' lead in half again when Zech scored on a shorthanded breakaway for his third goal of the season at 2:48 of the third period.

UAF tacked on a goal at 3:15 of the third when Kylar Hope scored, and finished the scoring at 16:49 on the power play when Chad Staley scored for the 6-2 final.

Ferris State outshot the Nanooks 35-22, but finished 1-8 on the power play. Alaska finished 2-8 on the man advantage for the game. Gustavs Grigals picked up the win for Alaska making 33 saves, while Salmenkangas made 16 for Ferris State.
