Northern Michigan Wins Series Opener Over Ferris State In WCHA Play

Marquette, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team fell 4-1 to the Northern Michigan Wildcats on Friday (Dec. 14) at the Berry Events Center in Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play.

Ferris State junior forward Dom Lutz scored the lone Bulldog goal while freshman goaltender Roni Salmenkangas made 32 stops.

For the Bulldogs, Lutz scored at 2:22 of the opening period for his first of the year, slapping in a rebound off of NMU goaltender Atte Tolvanen. Junior defenseman Joe Rutkowski picked up his fourth assist of the year on the goal.

The Wildcats put up four unanswered tallies, first at 8:06 of the first on the breakaway when Troy Loggins picked up his first of the game, followed by Grant Loven at 6:48 of the second for the eventual game-winning goals.

NMU picked up insurance tallies at 4:33 of the third when Denver Pierce scored, followed by Luke Voltin at 12:04 to cap the scoring.

The Wildcats led in shots on goal 36-19, but 13 NMU shots came with the man advantage. The Bulldogs held NMU 1-7 on the power play, while finishing 0-4 on the game with a 30-second power play to wrap up the contest.
For Northern Michigan, Tolvanen earned the win on 18 stops.

The Bulldogs head back to action on aturday (Dec. 15) at the Berry Events Center to wrap up their WCHA 2018 slate and before a two-week break.
