Overtime Goal Lifts #8 Minnesota State Past FSU In Exciting Weekend Opener

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team battled from a third period deficit to send its home contest against nationally eighth-ranked Minnesota State to overtime on Friday (Jan. 11) night, but fell 3-2 in the extra session to the Mavericks in the weekend opener at the Ewigleben Ice Arena.

The Mavericks were on the board twice before the end of the first frame as Reggie Lutz scored his second goal of the year at 12:07 and Jake Jaremko followed at 13:42 on the power play to put Minnesota State up 2-0 in the contest.

Ferris State fought from behind and cut the lead to one on senior defenseman Zac Tierney's second goal of the season. Freshman forwards Hunter Wendt (3) and Jake Transit (5) picked up assists on Tierney's goal at 6:04 of the second frame.

The Bulldogs evened the game at 2-2 at 12:24 of the third period when sophomore forward Lucas Finner deflected in a point shot by freshman defenseman Cooper Zech (15) for his third goal of the season. Junior defenseman Nate Kallen (16) also earned an assist on the tying goal.

In overtime, Ferris State had two good chances, but Minnesota State's Ian Scheid laced a shot through traffic at 3:03 of of the extra session for the game-winning goal. Lutz and Edwin Hookenson earned the helpers on the final goal.

In net, Ferris State junior goaltender Justin Kapelmaster made 38 saves in a strong effort for the Bulldogs. The Mavericks got 17 saves on 19 shots faced by Dryden McKay.

The Mavericks went 1-4 on the power play while the Bulldogs finished 0-1.

The contest was the third-straight game for FSU in which the Bulldogs have went to overtime this year.
