Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team fell 6-3 at home against the nationally #20 ranked Lake Superior State Lakers in Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play on Friday night at the Ewigleben Ice Arena.
The Bulldogs jumped out in front 1-0 when sophomore forward Frankie Melton scored his fourth goal of the year from sophomore forward Coale Norris (6) at 17:43 of the opening frame.
However, Lake Superior State went on to score six-straight, including two on a five-minute major power play, starting at 18:50 of the first when Ashton Calder tallied his first of two on the night, following it up with his second at 2:28 of the middle frame.
For LSSU, Diego Cuglietta scored at 3:06 of the second period, followed by Gage Torrel at 1:06 of the third, and then back-to-back goals by Anthony Nellis at 5:18 and 13:02 of the final frame to cap the Laker scoring.
Ferris State scored on a pair of late power plays, first at 16:57 of the final frame when senior defenseman Ryker Killins notched his first of the year from freshman defenseman Cooper Zech (18) and senior forward Corey Mackin (11).
FSU finished the scoring at 18:47 of the third when junior defenseman Joe Rutkowski netted his first goal of the season with the man-advantage from junior defenseman Cameron Clarke (8) and freshman forward Hunter Wendt (4).
Ferris State outshot Lake Superior State 35-30 in the game and 29-21 in the final 40 minutes. The Bulldogs went 2-7 on the power play while the Lakers went 3-6.
In goal, Ferris State junior goaltender Justin Kapelmaster made 24 saves while Lake Superior State netminder Nick Kossoff made 32 and picked up the win.
