Salmenkangas Stifles Huskies, But Bulldogs Fall At Michigan Tech

Houghton, Mich. - Ferris State sophomore goaltender Roni Salmenkangas made 14 first period stops and had a strong outing in goal, but Ferris State fell 2-1 to the Michigan Tech Huskies on Friday (Jan. 24) at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena in Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) action.

Ferris State junior forward Marshall Moise scored the Bulldog goal for his team-leading ninth tally of the year.

The Huskies jumped in front just 91 seconds into the second period when Raymond Brice scored on a rush for the 1-0 MTU lead.

Just four minutes later, MTU's Seamus Donohue took a shot that deflected sharply and beat Salmenkangas inside the right goal post for the 2-0 Michigan Tech advantage.

At 14:31, Ferris State senior forward Jason Tackett helped separate a puck from a Husky on the forecheck, and found Moise in front of the goal, where Moise tapped a backhander by MTU goaltender Matt Jurusik to cut the Huskies' lead in half at 2-1. Tackett picked up his 10th assist of the year on the goal.

Ferris State went on to outshoot Michigan Tech 24-16 in the final 40 minutes of play, but could not beat Jurusik a second time.

The Bulldogs finished with a 31-30 shots on goal advantage for the game, and took no penalties. Michigan Tech took two penalties in the third period, but Ferris State went 0-2 on the man advantage for the night.

For Ferris State, Salmenkangas made 28 stops on 30 shots for the night, while Jurusik made 30 on 31 for the game in the win for Michigan Tech.

Ferris State wraps the weekend series on Saturday (Jan. 25) in Houghton at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena at 6:07 pm ET.
