Incoming Freshman Stein Projected To Be Selected In National Hockey League Entry Draft

Big Rapids, Mich. - Incoming Ferris State University men's ice hockey goaltender Logan Stein is receiving strong interest to be chosen in the 2020 National Hockey League (NHL) entry draft this coming June.

If chosen, Stein would become the eighth Ferris State player to be selected. Four players (In Bold) have been both drafted and dressed in NHL regular season contests. If chosen, Stein would follow:

  • John Gruden - 1990, 8th Round (168) Boston Bruins
  • Dave Karpa - 1991, 4th Round (68) Quebec Nordiques
  • Derek MacIntyre - 2004, 8th Round (234) San Jose Sharks
  • Chris Zarb - 2004, 5th Round (144) Philadelphia Flyers
  • Zach Redmond - 2008, 7th Round (184) Atlanta Thrashers
  • Kyle Schempp - 2014, 6th Round (155) New York Islanders
  • Cameron Clarke - 2016, 5th Round (136) Boston Bruins

Only one Bulldog goaltender has ever been selected in the NHL Entry Draft (MacIntyre).

Stein a native of Suwanee, Georgia, is a 2001 birth year and has been ranked in NHL Central Scouting's top available North American goaltenders all season.

In the United States Hockey League (USHL) Stein posted career bests with a .911 save percentage with 2.33 goals against average for the Waterloo Blackhawks, the same program that produced star Bulldog goaltenders CJ Motte (2015) and Phil Osaer (2001).

Stein finished his season sixth in save percentage in the USHL, and second in goals against average. The Blackhawks were comfortably in first place in the USHL Western Conference standings at 33-14-2 at the time of the season pause with 68 points.

This past season, Stein helped backstop team USA at the World Junior A Challenge in Dawson Creek, British Columbia to a third place finish. Stein had a .920 save percentage in three outings for team USA, and also competed in the 2020 Biosteel All-American Game.

Stein is also an Oakland Junior Grizzlies alum, the same program that produced current Bulldogs Coale Norris, Blake EvennouJake TransitMarshall MoiseBrenden Rons, Hunter Wendt, and Justin Michaelian.

In total, 12 former Bulldogs have dressed in at least one NHL game, including Cris Kunitz, Jason Blake, Karpa, Redmond, Gruden, Chad Billins, Rob Collins, Andy Roach, Dean Clark, Greg Rallo, and Michael Colman. The most recent Bulldog to debut was 2017 graduate Gerald Mayhew who suited up for 13 NHL contests this season with the Minnesota Wild where he scored a pair of goals. 

Class of 2003 graduate Chris Kunitz is the most decorated of former Ferris State athlete at the professional level, having retired last season after playing in 1,022 games over 16 years with four Stanley Cup Championship rings, an Olympic Gold Medal and 268 goals with 351 assists for 619 points as an undrafted free agent. Kunitz was a staple in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, making 13 consecutive appearances with 76 points (23 goals, 53 assists). Kunitz won the Stanley Cup in each finals appearance he made (2007, 2009, 2016, 2017).

Kunitz is the only NHL player in history to win four or more Stanley Cups while not dressing at any point for Montreal, Toronto, Boston, Detroit, Edmonton, the New York Islanders or Rangers, or New Jersey, who have combined for 67 Stanley Cup Championships.

Amongst Stein's fellow incoming freshmen, Ben Schultheis, Stepan Pokorny, Antonio Venuto, Drew Cooper, and Sam Skinner are all NHL Draft Eligible. 

The 2020 NHL Entry Draft will be hosted by the Montreal Canadiens, and was initially scheduled for June 26-27, though the draft has been postponed due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
