Bulldogs Tie Game Late But Fall To UST

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team erased a three-goal third period deficit, but fell 4-3 to St. Thomas in Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) action Saturday (Jan. 15).

Ferris State senior forward Ethan Stewart picked up a pair of points in the game for the Bulldogs.

St. Thomas took a 3-0 lead to open the game. Cameron Recchi opened the scoring on the power play on a deflected shot at 8:45 of the first period for a 1-0 UST lead.

Later in the period, Tim Piechowski finished a breakaway at 14:39 of the first period for the Tommies. He finished another shorthanded at 8:28 of the second frame for the 3-0 edge.

Ferris State cracked the scoreboard at 5:16 of the third on the power play when Ethan Stewart finished off a fast double-zone crossing play for his fifth goal of the year to cut the lead to 3-1 UST. Senior defenseman Brendon Michaelian (8) and freshman forward Bradley Marek (5) picked up the helpers on the play.

Later, at 13:32, sophomore forward Jacob Dirks buried his second goal of the year from freshman forward Zach Faremouth (3) and Stewart (5) to cut the Tommies lead to 3-2 at the left side of the goal.

Then, at 19:05, junior defenseman Blake Evennou scored his second goal of the season and weekend to tie the game at 3-3. Freshman defenseman Nico DeVita (1) and senior forward Justin Michaelian (10) added assists on the goal.

The Tommies scored on a net mouth scramble at 19:56.9 when John Schuldt punched in a loose puck for the 4-3 final.

Ferris State owned play territorially with a 41-16 shots on goal advantage. The Bulldogs went 1-3 on the power play while the Tommies were 1-4.

The Bulldogs also won 49 face-offs to UST's 21.

In goal, Peter Thome picked up the win with 38 saves. Noah Giesbrecht took the loss in relief, he made five stops on six shots.

Ferris State travels west to take on Bemidji State at the Sanford Center on Jan. 21-22 at 8:07 p.m. (ET) and 7:07 p.m. (ET), respectively.
