Big Rapids, Mich. – The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team won its second consecutive game and scored a season-high five goals in a 5-2 win over Augustana Friday (Nov. 22) in Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) action at the Ewigleben Ice Arena.
The Bulldogs (4-9-2, 3-6-0) got multi-point efforts from Tyler Schleppe, Logan Heroux and Caiden Gault, with Heroux getting his first career goal. Ferris State also converted two power play goals for their third and fourth conversions this year, and Christopher Lie collected his first career point with an assist on FSU's first goal.
Noah West started between the pipes for Ferris State and earned his fourth win of the season, stopping 20-of-22 shots along the way.
Matt Corbet scored the game's first goal at 8:32 in the first period on FSU's first power play opportunity. Lie took a shot that was saved by Augustana's starting goaltender, Christian Manz, and the puck was loose on the doorstep. Corbet skated in and shot the rebound five-hole for his second career goal. Lie recorded his first collegiate point with an assist, and Schleppe also recorded a helper, giving him at least one point in three-straight games.
FSU took a 2-0 at 15:35 on Jacob Dirks's first goal of the year. Kaleb Ergang sent a pass from below the red line to Dirks in the low slot, and Dirks lit the lamp for the first time this year. Ergang got his third assist, while Gault picked up his second.
Augustana stormed back in period two and tied the game with two power play conversions. The first came from Joey DelGreco at 4:32 assisted by Payton Matsui and Brett Meerman. Matsui sent a pass to the backside for DelGreco, who beat West with a shot to the top-left corner. Hunter Bischoff then tied the game at two goals apiece at 9:30 with another power play goal. Uula Ruikka and Nace Langus had the helpers.
Ferris State reclaimed a lead late in the second period with Gault's team-leading sixth goal at 19:37. Augustana tried to clear the puck after a faceoff win the offensive zone from Ferris State, but Heroux kept it in at the blueline, sending the puck right to Gault at the top of the slot. He fired a shot into the top-left corner and gave Ferris State a 3-2 lead going into the second intermission. Heroux recorded his fourth assist on Gault's team-high eighth point.
FSU scored two more times to close the 5-2 victory. Heroux struck on the power play for his first collegiate goal at 6:13 with a shot through traffic from the CCHA logo. Schleppe sent a pass up the left-wing wall for Connor McGrath, who then found Heroux for the shot. Schleppe collected his second assist of the night and McGrath got his fifth helper this year.
Schleppe concluded his first career three-point performance with a goal at 12:23. Xavier Jean-Louis fired a shot from the high slot that Schleppe redirected for his fourth goal in the past three games. Jean-Louis had the lone assist, giving him two now this year.
For the game, Ferris State outshot Augustana 32-22, won 35 faceoffs compared to 19 for the Vikings, converted 2-4 power play tries and killed 2-4 Viking penalties.
Individually, Schleppe had a game-high three points, giving him six points this year, all coming in the previous three games. Heroux had his first career goal and multi-point performance, while Gault tallied his first two-point effort since FSU played at Augustana Jan. 26, 2024.
Cole Burtch led the squad with 11 faceoff wins while he, Schleppe, Dirks and Faremouth all won more than 50% of their draws. Gault led the team with five shots on goal and Schleppe had four.
Heroux blocked two shots to go along with his strong offensive performance, and Dirks, Andrew Noel and Nico DeVita all blocked two shots as well. The Bulldogs had four penalties in the game, two from Max Itagaki and one each from Lie and Jean-Louis.
DelGreco led Augustana with four shots on goal and Luke Mobley won six faceoffs to lead the squad.
