
Lie Scores First Collegiate Goal in Ferris State’s 3-2 Win Over Michigan Tech
Houghton, Mich. – Freshman defenseman Christopher Lie scored his first career goal Saturday (Feb. 22) in the Ferris State University men's ice hockey squad's 3-2 win against Michigan Tech University at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena in Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) play.
The Bulldogs (12-18-2, 11-13 CCHA) fell behind 2-0 by the end of the first period but battled back and got the eventual game-winning goal from Zach Faremouth in the third. Faremouth extended his point streak to four games and scored his first career game-winning tally.
Noah West drew the start for FSU and earned his 12th win, stopping 27-of-29 shots faced. Kaleb Ergang registered two helpers in the game and Kade Turner collected his first collegiate assist.
MTU jumped out to a 2-0 advantage with first period goals from Elias Jansson and Marcus Pedersen. Jansson scored his 11th goal of the season at 6:22 with Nick Williams and Isaac Gordon assisting. Pedersen scored at 13:55 and Lauri Raiman and Trevor Kukkonen had helpers as the Huskies took a multi-goal lead into the second period for the second consecutive night.
The Bulldogs answered back with two goals in the second period. Tyler Schleppe scored FSU's first goal at 12:01. Turner cleared the Bulldog zone with a pass up the left-wing side for Gavin Best who worked down the wall and then sent a pass to Schleppe in the circle. Schleppe one-timed a shot past MTU goaltender Derek Mullahy for his ninth goal of the year. Best got his seventh helper and Turner recorded his first collegiate assist.
Lie scored his first career goal at 19:47 with a power play strike that sent FSU into the intermission tied 2-2. Lie ripped a shot from the high slot through traffic that beat Mullahy. Ergang got his 12th assist and Jacob Badal collected his fifth.
Faremouth gave FSU its first lead of the series at 7:30 in the third. Caiden Gault won a puck battle at the right wall and found Faremouth in the slot for a shot. Faremouth's fifth goal gave Ferris State a 3-2 lead. Gault collected his eighth assist and Ergang got his second of the night.
MTU pulled Mullahy for the extra attacker with 2:43 remaining. The Huskies had four shots on goal during that stretch, all of which were saved by West. Trevor Taulien also blocked a shot as the Bulldogs secured a series split.
For the game, Ferris State went 1-4 on the power play, 2-2 on the penalty kill, had 25 shots on goal, won 27 faceoffs and blocked eight shots. The Huskies had 29 shots on goal, won 30 faceoffs and blocked seven shots.
Ergang was the only skater for either team with multiple points and also tied Best and Logan Heroux for the team lead with three shots on goal. Taulien and Travis Shoudy each blocked two shots while Schleppe, Gault, Ergang and Xavier Jean-Louis all finished +1. Schleppe also had a game-high 10 faceoff wins.
Ferris State has two games remaining in the regular season. The Bulldogs will return to Big Rapids for a home series against Northern Michigan on Friday (Feb. 28) and Saturday (March 1). Saturday's game will be senior night and the Bulldogs will honor head coach Bob Daniels throughout the series.
