
Ferris State Hockey's Season Ends in Mason Cup Quarterfinals
Mendota Heights, Minn. – The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team had its season ended Saturday (March 8) in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Mason Cup Quarterfinals against the University of St. Thomas.
The Bulldogs (13-20-3) suffered a 4-1 setback as UST advanced to the Mason Cup Semifinals, winning the best-of-three series against Ferris State two games to none. The Bulldogs finish their season with 13 wins including seven in their final 13 games. It was the final game for Head Coach Bob Daniels, who finished his Bulldog career with 510 wins (all with Ferris State), 16th most of any college hockey coach all time.
In Saturday's loss, Noah West stopped 24-27 shots faced and Caiden Gault scored FSU's goal.
Neither team scored in the first period as West and UST goaltender Jake Sibell both stopped every shot they faced. St. Thomas then scored three unanswered goals. Grant Docter lit the lamp at 4:54 in the second and Liam Malmquist scored at 12:32 as UST took a 2-0 lead into the intermission.
Malmquist scored at 15:01 in the third period to give St. Thomas a three-goal advantage. Gault scored his team-leading 15th goal at 17:57. He stole the puck from Jake Braccini in the left-wing circle and then fired a shot past Sibell. Logan Heroux and Cole Burth assisted. Heroux finished his freshman campaign with 11 assists and Burtch led the team with 26 points.
Malmquist scored an empty net goal at 19:34 to complete the hat trick and help St. Thomas win the series.
For the game, FSU was 2-2 on the penalty kill, 0-3 on the power play, blocked seven shots, had 26 shots on goal and 26 faceoff wins. St. Thomas had 28 shots on goal and 35 faceoff wins while Sibell made 25 saves.
Jacob Badal led the way with three shots on goal and Faremouth paced the team with 12 faceoff wins. Travis Shoudy had three blocks and Trevor Taulien had two.
For the season, Gault led the team with 15 goals and Burtch led in assists (19) and points (26). Senior forward Kaleb Ergang had 21 points and junior Gavin Best scored 10 goals.
West finished the season with 13 wins, the most by a Bulldog goaltender since 2015-16. He had 1001 saves, second most by any goaltender in college hockey as of March 8.
Ferris State now heads into the offseason and will look ahead to the 2025-26 campaign.
