Bulldogs Score Big League Win Over GVSU

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's tennis team wrapped up its home slate by earning an important Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) win over archrival Grand Valley State on Sunday (March 27) at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center.

The Bulldogs' concluded their three-match weekend homestand unbeaten with a narrow 5-4 win over the Lakers in their final scheduled home contest of the 2011 season.

Ferris State dropped the first doubles match, but earned wins at both the second and third flights to grab a 2-1 advantage heading into singles action.  Both the combinations of junior Jack Swan and sophomore Tyler Marengo (#2) along with the pairing of junior Justin Hermes and junior Oriol Vidal Cortes (#3) posted identical 8-3 wins.

In singles play, the Lakers took the two, three and four spots in the lineup with three-set triumphs in each.  However, Bulldog senior Kyle Revall notched a 6-4, 6-2 win at the top spot in the lineup and Vidal Cortes was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at the fifth flight.

The clincher went to Marengo, who scored a three-set victory of his own with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 decision against GVSU's Josh Kazdan in the final deciding match.

With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 10-4 overall this season and 4-1 in the GLIAC.  FSU also handed the Lakers' their first league loss of the campaign as Grand Valley State also owns a 4-1 league record and is now 10-9 overall on the year.

In addition to being a key league match with only three conference regular-season matches remaining for both schools, the victory was also a big regional one for the Bulldogs as FSU presently ranks sixth in the Midwest Region and GVSU came in ninth.

Ferris State will hit the road for its final three GLIAC matches next week as the Bulldogs visit league newcomer Ohio Dominican on Friday (April 1) at 3 p.m. (ET) to start the stretch.  Ferris then takes on the league's other first-year school in Lake Erie on Saturday (April 2) at 10 a.m. (ET) followed by a trip to Wayne State the following Tuesday (April 5) for its final conference tilt.
