Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's tennis team, which captured its first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament Championship since 1999 this past weekend, has officially received a berth into the 2012 NCAA Division II Tournament.
The 48 selected teams along with the preliminary-round sites were announced late Tuesday night by the NCAA-II Men's and Women's Tennis Committee during a live selection show special at www.ncaa.com.
Ferris State is seeded fifth in the Midwest Region and will square off against fourth-seeded Lewis (Ill.) on Monday (April 30) at 10 a.m. (CT) in Springfield, Mo. Top-seeded Drury (Mo.) University will host one of two preliminary regional rounds in the Midwest.
The winner of Monday's regional match between Ferris State and Lewis will then face Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Champion Drury on Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. (CT). Both regional matches will take place at Drury's Cooper Tennix Complex.
Northwood (14-1) is the number two seed in the region and will host the other three-team Midwest Regional (Midwest No. 2) which includes third-seeded Southern Indiana (21-6) and number six seed Northern Kentucky (14-6) meeting in the first round.
The winners of both the Drury and Northwood regional events will advance to the NCAA-II Sweet Sixteen and the remainder of the tourney set for May 16-19 in Louisville, Ky.
The Ferris State men's team, presently 16-6 overall, will be making its 17th overall NCAA-II Tournament appearance.
The Bulldogs will return to the field for the first time since 2010 after missing the event last season. Prior to 2011, the Bulldogs had made 13 consecutive trips to the regional tournament. Ferris has advanced to the NCAA-II "Sweet Sixteen" round nine times overall in its history.
The Bulldogs captured the 2012 GLIAC Tournament crown under head coach Alex Palladino with a stunning 5-4 triumph over archrival Northwood on Sunday (April 22) afternoon. FSU upset the nationally 13th-ranked Timberwolves in the league final to claim their first conference championship of any kind since 1999. NU had won 12-straight GLIAC Tournament titles since FSU's last win over Northwood in the '99 league finale.
FSU is currently ranked 46th nationally while Lewis enters the regional listed 37th in the country. The Flyers recorded a narrow 5-4 win over the Bulldogs earlier this year (March 13) and own a current 19-5 overall mark this campaign.
