Bulldog Men's Tennis Kicks Off Spring Season With Close Match Against Davenport

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's tennis team officially kicked off its spring campaign with a hard-fought non-conference match against Davenport University on Saturday (Feb. 1) at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids.

The Bulldogs suffered a 5-4 setback to the Panthers in a competitive match between the two West Michigan schools. It marked FSU's first official dual action of the 2013-14 campaign.

Ferris State was also slated to travel to NCAA Division I Toledo (Ohio) for a Saturday evening matchup following the morning dual with Davenport, but the trip was cancelled due to snowy weather and driving conditions.

The visiting Panthers took two of the three doubles flights against the Bulldogs in building a 2-1 lead after the tandem action. DU captured wins at both the first and third flights with the Ferris State combination of Laurent Mailloux and Otto Keresztes posting an 8-4 triumph at second doubles.

Both Mailloux and Keresztes also earned victories in singles play as FSU won the second, third and fourth flights. Aaron Dial won a three-setter at two singles with Mailloux and Keresztes winning in straight-sets at third and fourth singles, respectively.

However, Davenport's Jordan Parker was able to post a three-set victory at the top flight and the Panthers also won a three-setter at the fifth position in the lineup along with a straight-set triumph at the bottom flight to split the six singles matches and earn the win.

With the cancellation of the match at Toledo, the next scheduled action for the Bulldogs takes place on Saturday, Feb. 15, as FSU hosts Olivet Nazarene in non-league play starting at 10 a.m. (ET) inside the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center.

The Bulldogs will then open Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play the following week with a trip to Ohio to face Tiffin, Ohio Dominican and Findlay on Feb. 21-23.
