Men's Tennis Has Strong Showing To Open Year At Two-Day Warhawk Invitational

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State men's tennis squad took part in the two-day Warhawk Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater as the Bulldogs opened action Friday and Saturday (Sept. 5-6) in Whitewater, Wis.

The event was held at Wangerin Courts and included competition from NCAA Division I, II and NAIA schools.

Bulldog junior Laurent Galarneau advanced to the title match at the number one singles flight before falling by a 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-4) score. He finished with a 2-1 overall record in individual play.

FSU's Tyler Bridges registered a 1-2 mark in singles action at the second flight. He won his opener before falling in the semifinals and the third-place match.

Senior Aaron Dial also posted a 1-2 overall record while competing in the third singles flight. He fell in his opener before coming back to split a pair of matches in the consolation round.

Meanwhile, Zachary Grabovic also was 1-2 for the tournament, winning his opening quarterfinal match before falling in the semifinals and third-place contest at the number four flight.

FSU's Raleigh Grossbaum was the tournament champion at the number five flight as he finished a perfect 3-0, including a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) triumph over Wisconsin-Whitewater's Michael Schnarr in the finale.

In sixth singles action, FSU's Simon Levy earned runner-up honors. He won his opening two matches before suffering a hard-fought 6-0, 6-7 (4-7), 1-0 (10-8) decision to Grand Valley State's Jack Heiniger in the title match.

A total of eight individual flights were contested with Ferris State's Renan Baldi posting a 2-1 mark for third place at the seventh flight and the Bulldogs' Jordan Helderman claming runner-up honors with a 2-1 mark at the eighth flight.

In number one doubles competition, the Bulldog pairing of Galarneau and Bridges placed second at the number one flight with a 2-1 mark for the tournament. The pairing of Dial and Grabovic also finished as the runner-ups at the number two flight and posted a 2-1 record after falling in the title match.

Additionally, in third doubles action, Grossbaum and Helderman turned in a 1-2 record after falling in the consolation final while Levy and Baldi teamed up to record a 2-1 mark and finished as the runner-ups at the number four flight.

Ferris State will be back in action on Friday and Saturday (Sept. 12-13) as FSU hosts the Bulldog Invitational at the Racquet and Fitness Center.
