Ferris State Men's Tennis Wins First Outright GLIAC Championship Since 1994

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's tennis team became the latest Bulldog squad to claim a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship this campaign as FSU topped Ohio Dominican 6-3 on Sunday (April 19) to secure the league's outright regular-season crown.

Ferris State won its first league regular-season championship since 1999 and its first outright title since 1994 as the Bulldogs finished GLIAC action unbeaten at 9-0 in the regular-season. The men's tennis squad also joined the Bulldog football, volleyball and men's basketball squads to win a conference title this school year.

Prior to this year, Northwood had won the last 20 regular-season crowns in a row dating back to 1995, including a share of the title with FSU in 1999. Either Northwood or Ferris State have won the GLIAC Championship every year since 1982. The two schools shared the crown in 1982 before FSU had a 12-year run as the outright champion prior to the NU stretch.

On Sunday, the nationally 47th-ranked Bulldogs ran their winning streak to nine consecutive matches as they improved to 16-5 overall with the victory in the regular-season finale. FSU took a 2-1 lead after the doubles round with wins at the second and third flights.

In singles action, the Bulldogs won three of the five matches that were played and also picked up a win by default at six singles to wrap up the victory. The win over ODU came in the Panthers' final match ever as the program is being discontinued at the end of this year.

With the win, the Bulldogs also clinched the number one seed for the GLIAC Tournament, which takes place Friday thru Sunday, April 24-26, in Midland. FSU earned a first-round bye as the top seed for the six-team event and will square off against either fourth-seeded Wayne State or fifth-seeded Tiffin on Saturday (April 25) at 3:45 p.m. (ET) at the Midland Community Tennis Center.

FSU previously won the tournament in 2012 and will be looking to complete a sweep of the regular-season and tournament titles.
